Catherine M. Shaw

Catherine M. Shaw, 83, of Indiana, passed away on Tuesday September 15, 2026, at St Andrews Village. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose kindness and caring spirit touched the lives of many. Her compassion was without condition; she embraced each person in the fullness of who they were, looking beyond their imperfections and meeting them always with understanding and grace. Her maternal spirit extended far beyond the bounds of family; to many, she became a mother in all but name, offering the tenderness, guidance, and unconditional love their hearts had long needed.

Born in Indiana on September 28, 1942, Catherine was the daughter of the late Russell S. and Thelma P. (Lower) Uncapher. Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Russell S. and Thelma P. (Lower) Uncapher, and her cherished grandparents, Paul H. and Carrie M. (Thomas) Lower, whose love and influence remained with her throughout her life. 

Motherhood was Catherine’s greatest vocation and the abiding center of her life. She also spent a meaningful chapter working at Scenery Hill Manor, where the compassion she gave so freely at home extended naturally to others. Though her time there represented only a small part of her life; the work brought her genuine fulfillment and allowed her nurturing spirit to reach far beyond her own family. Catherine possessed a gift for creating warmth, beauty, and abundance wherever she was. In her younger years, she had a lively social spirit and loved being in the company of others. Her lifelong affinity for plants was evident in the garden, where she could often be found barefoot, and later in the houseplants she faithfully tended. She had an eye for all things pretty and sparkling and found joy in the details that made a home feel special. She also loved to cook, and her beautiful holiday meals made childhood celebrations feel magical. Garlic and onion were nonnegotiable in her kitchen and found their way into nearly every savory dish she prepared. Catherine lived modestly but gave expansively. Her deepest contentment came from making others feel cherished and seeing the people around her thrive.

Those left to cherish Catherine’s memory include her four children: James W. Shaw of Hartford, Connecticut; Kenneth E. Shaw of Sneedville, Tennessee; and Jayme L. Shaw and William E. Shaw, both of Indiana, Pennsylvania. She will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Paul, William, and Ashley Shaw; her great-grandson, Ryland Greenawalt; and her stepbrother, William Chappell, and his wife, Cindy; and many cherished cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. Catherine was formidable in spirit, forthright in manner, and extraordinarily tender at heart. She embraced everything that made life rich. She loved good food, hearty laughter, and time spent with the people she treasured. Her colorful language, irrepressible wit, and unmistakable candor gave her a presence that was vivid, authentic, and impossible to forget. The truest measure of her life cannot be found in dates or accomplishments. It lives in the refuge she created and, in every life, made richer by her presence. Her legacy endures in the resilience she embodied and in the ordinary moments that have become precious in her absence. The silence she leaves is immeasurable, but the inheritance of her spirit is greater still. It will live in the stories that bring laughter, in the strength that rises when it is needed most, and in the devotion woven so deeply through her family that even death cannot unravel it.

Friends and family will be received from 2:00 pm until the time of the Memorial Service at 3:00 pm on Monday September 21, 2026, at Hilltop Baptist Church, 4859 Route 286 West, Indiana. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the life she lived. Afterward, all are invited to remain for a spaghetti dinner in her honor. Sharing a meal together feels especially fitting for a woman who found such joy in good food, warm company, and making others feel at home.
