Harold E. Evans

Harold “Herk” E. Evans, 87, of Indiana, passed away July 6, 2025, at his residence. The son of the late Charles and Agnes (Kunkle) Evans, he was born Nov. 8, 1937 in Torrance. Herk lost both of his parents by the age of two and was raised by his grandmother, Della (Hysong) Kunkle.

Herk was a graduate of Blairsville High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). He worked in healthcare at Torrance State Hospital for many years and later for Indiana County, where he lived his entire adult life. Herk was known for his gentle, humble and giving nature. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren, loved following sports and researching family genealogy.

Herk is survived by six children: Michael (Maryanne) Evans, of Punxsutawney; Kathy Smith, of Interlochen, Fla.; Deborah (James) Laughlin, of Indiana; Amy (Bill) Balint, of Indiana; Rebecca (William) Dunstan, of Moseley, Va.; and Thomas (Tammy) Evans, of Wilkes-Barre. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Herk was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Nancy L. (Smith) Evans; grandson, Michael Evans; great grandson, Owen Kubalek; and son-in-law, Donald Smith.

Friends and family will be received from 12 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2025, with a funeral service to follow at Robinson-Lytle-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 36 N 7th Street, Indiana, with Pastor Bill Blair officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
