Helen Libengood, 94, of Blairsville passed away on July 29, 2025, at her home, in which she was born, in Cokeville Heights, PA.

The daughter of James A. and Alice (McTaggart) Sloan, Helen was born on June 30, 1931, in Cokeville, PA.

She lived most of her life in the Blairsville area and was a member of SS Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville.

Helen was a graduate of Derry Twp. High School, Class of 1949.

She was employed by First Commonwealth as a teller for 17 years until her retirement in 1997. She and her husband, Don, owned and operated Don’s Tavern in the 1970s. She was a stay-at-home Mom in years prior.

Helen loved to cook and play host to family and friends. Her family was the most important part of her life. She loved having her family all around her, and they surrounded her when she took her last breath.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald in 2009; two infant sons; sister, Julia Alston; brothers: John (Bud), James (Bossy), and Paul (Beanie) Sloan; grandson-in-law Richard Shank, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Surviving are her children: Kathleen (Donald) Steffey, Donna (Lawrence) Brodrick, Shirley (Walter) Gill, James (Diana) Libengood all of Blairsville, and Barbara (Randall) Henry of Murrysville; 11 grandchildren, James (Kim) Steffey, Justin (Jodi) Steffey, Rebecca Shank (fiancé Max Brooks), Mark Brodrick, Kristie (Kevin) Jennings, David (Raechel) Gill, Andrea Mackell, Keith (Megan) Libengood, Kelly (Brandon) Fess, Nathan Henry, and Amanda Henry; 14 great-grandchildren: Jessica (Tyler) Piper; Emilee Steffey; Addison and Aiden Jennings; Anna Shank; Tyler and Rylee Mackell; Jordan and Carter Gill; Helen, James, and Emma Libengood; and Cole and Chase Fess; beloved sisters-in-law Virginia Sloan, Bea Rinaldi, and Goldie Haraseviat, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank her dedicated caregivers Michele Palmer, Darlene Getty, Wilma Miller, and Tara McAdoo as well as Independence Hospice staff, especially her nurse Ashley and aide Jenny. The family is incredibly thankful and appreciative to have been able to have surrounded her with such caring and loving people.

In lieu of flowers, to honor Helen’s memory donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM where a Wake Service will be held at 6:30 PM at Shoemaker Funeral Home Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville. Prayers of Transfer will be held in the funeral on Saturday, August 2nd at 9:30 AM followed by a funeral Mass at 10 AM at SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, 155 N. Brady St., Blairsville. Interment will follow in SS. Simon and Jude Cemetery, Blairsville.
