Margaret “Peggy” L. (Smrek) Kiral, 97, of Indiana, passed away July 2, 2025, at Heritage Grove at Indiana Personal Care Home.
The daughter of the late Benjamin and Appolonia (Bondra) Smrek, she was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Coral.
Peggy was a 1945 graduate of Laurel Lamar High School in Homer City. After high school, she was employed by the Borough of Indiana as the Mayor’s secretary. She was then employed at First Federal Savings and Loan Association, now InFirst Bank, for 29 years until her retirement. Following her retirement, Peggy filled her days helping out wherever she could. She loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, golfing in the Thursday morning league at Meadow Lane Golf Course and playing bingo at the Elks Lodge and at the Indiana Roller Rink for the Kiwanis Club. Peggy was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church and was an active member of the Court St. Bernard 339 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), often co-chairing their card parties. She also regularly assisted with funeral meals at the church.
Peggy will be remembered for her wonderful smile, stylish dressing, sense of humor, her cheerfulness, kindness and willingness to help people. She always had time for people.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Nancy J. Smith; grandchildren: David R. (Stacey) Smith, Maria J. (William) Malone, Alaina Kiral (Dylan) Stapleton, Madison Kiral; and a great-grandson, Charles Malone. She is also survived by a sister, Sophia Dillon and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Kiral; a son, Thomas E. Kiral; sisters: Rose Supko, Ann Stipcak, Helen Bertig and Dorothy Sanford; and a brother, Thomas Smrek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church, 200 Clairvaux Drive, Indiana, with Fr. Jonathan Ulrick as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Robinson-Lytle-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 36 N 7th Street, Indiana, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
